Information about Buenos Aires:
Information about Sierra Grande:
The town of Rio Negro is on the side of National Route No. 3, 135 kilometers north of Puerto Madryn and 117 south of Las Grutas, so it has become a place of passage and rest towards these popular tourist destinations.
The Old Sierra
At 2km we find the Sierra Vieja, where the current town originated and where we can observe adobe housing relics that once knew how to be the houses of those who gave rise to Sierra Grande.
Right here you can visit the Museum that keeps the history of Sierra Vieja and Sierra Grande, the Duamn Ruca Museum, which in Mapuche language means: "House of Memory".
Island of the Birds
A few km from the Golden Beaches we find the Isla de los Pájaros. It is an extension of the coast that forms a bay at low tide, but at times of the day when the sea rises it becomes an island: the Island of the Birds.
It constitutes a natural reserve of different birds that go to the island in search of food and place to nest.
If we visit it with an authorized guide and at convenient times, we can visit it as long as we are careful in the hours when the water level rises.
Somuncurá Plateau
A couple of hours from Sierra Grande and almost 200km away, we will access the Somuncurá Plateau. It is an important elevation that crowns the almost plain that accompanied our entire trip.
In Mapuche language it means: "Stone that speaks" or "Stone that sounds". It exceeds 300 million years, constituting the only highland of pre-Cambrian origin that we can observe in the extra Andean area of Río Negro.
This volcanic outcrop has heights that vary from 800 meters to 1900 m.a.s.l. It has an area of 1,600,000 hectares and constitutes one of the protected areas of mayos extension in our country.
In its corners it keeps all the history of the birth of our Cordillera, the later geological processes, it is witness of the emergence of unique fauna and flora and the time along with other factors modified its relief ... originating those that we can see today: an island in Middle of a province.
The isolation that it presents with respect to the rest of the relief made possible the emergence of very little seen animal species in the world, a clear example is marked by the "naked mojarra": a type of mojarra that does not present scales on its body.
If we can carefully observe the relief that accompanies us as we travel Route 5 in search of the "island", we will observe that its height is really considerable and acts within the relief as a mountain that filters rainfall, causing springs, rivers and lagoons.
It has an arid climate, with temperatures ranging from -25 ° C to + 40 ° C, generating significant thermal amplitudes and the need for adaptation of animal and plant species to the aridity of the land.
